In 2013 we witnessed the removal of President Morsi in Egypt via a military coup.
Morsi was the first democratically elected president Egypt had seen in decades. Yet those championing democracy and claiming to be working towards upholding the democratic system in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, namely the Western leaders, were very quick to support this coup!
William Hague (the British foreign Secretary) told BBC Radio 4 the day after the coup that "we have to work with whoever is in authority in Egypt"
This blatantly contradicts the position of the British government in Mali, Libya and Iraq. British forces have been deployed to "protect freedom and democracy", yet when a clear violation of democratic process has been demonstrated in Egypt, one that secures their own interest, the UK's stance has changed?
If this principle was applied, that the British government would not intervene when a popular government existed, their military intervention in Afghanistan would be a unheard of as a popular government was established in 2001, which they overthrew with military intervention!
The removal by the military of the MB government has shown that western calls for democracy and freedom mask their real intention, to diminish the popularity for political Islam.
